Documentary: Geoderma – the living skin of planet Earth
“Geoderma – the living skin of planet Earth” (in Slovak: Geoderma – živý plášť planéty Zem) is a 26-minute documentary film on soil biodiversity presented by soil biologist Ladislav Miko.
Soil supports life on Earth and people could not exist on this planet without it. What do we know about soil today? And how do we deal with this knowledge? How do people care for our planet’s skin, for geoderma? Soil biologist and the host of the documentary Ladislav Miko answers these questions. The film is available in Slovak and English.
Objective
The primary goal of this documentary is to foster appreciation, understanding, and stewardship of the hidden world beneath our feet – the living organisms in soil. By shedding light on soil biodiversity, the film aims to contribute to the preservation of biodiversity, ecological balance, and the well-being of future generations.
Approach
Ladislav Miko guides viewers on a journey to explore the intricate world of soil organisms. The documentary reveals the remarkable microworld teeming with hundreds of thousands of species, from bacteria and fungi to earthworms and insects, as well as organisms that can only be seen under a magnifying glass or microscope. By showcasing the vital role of these organisms in soil formation through the decomposition of organic matter, the film emphasises the interconnectedness of life on Earth.
This unique documentary on soil biodiversity educates, inspires, and mobilises audiences to appreciate the importance of soil life and take action to conserve it.
