The Soil Demonstration Garden: An Innovative Tool for Enhancing Soil Literacy

We are pleased to announce the success of the AMU TEAM of the LOESS project in securing PLN 110,500 from the Regional Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management to create an Educational Soil Garden at the Collegium Geographicum of Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, Poland. This garden will serve as a space to demonstrate and promote good practices in soil health. This space is intended to deepen knowledge about the soil environment. In the new garden, you can discover, for example, that soil is a priceless, non-renewable resource, and its world is much more interesting than you might think. The newly opened garden serves as a “living laboratory,” enabling direct exploration of the properties and processes occurring in soil.

The garden will contribute to deepening knowledge about the soil environment and improving public awareness of soil management issues. It will serve as a space for educating students, children, and young people visiting AMU during regular educational events, as well as local residents, about soil science. At the same time, by integrating the academic community, students, and residents of Poznań, the Educational Soil Garden will serve a social purpose. The garden will feature various features designed to enhance soil health and preserve the biodiversity of the Adam Mickiewicz University Campus, including an educational shelter, educational boards, a closed soil profile, demonstration plots, a  soil organic matter processing system, raised beds, a vermicompost bin, and a pre-culture bed.
