Climate change course in agricultural schools
This new elective “Climate Change in Agriculture” for vocational students at Serbian agricultural schools aims to educate them on the preservation and regeneration of soil, water, and the atmosphere. The course is designed to synergise agriculture and sustainability, fostering resilience in the face of climate change. Tcreated within EU financed project “Strengthening the resilience of the agricultural sector in case of natural disasters” and by the joint efforts of the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy; Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO); Institute for the Improvement of Education in Serbia (ZUOV) in collaboration with Young Researchers Serbia (MIS).
Five agricultural high schools from five cities in Serbia – Kraljevo, Požega, Sombor, Požarevac and Zrenjanin included this electional course in their curriculum for fourth year students in school year 2023/2024. Teachers from these five schools participated in special training about how to teach the subject, although the course is available to all agricultural high schools in Serbia.
Objective
The objective of the course is to enhance environmental resilience and mitigate climate change by educating young generations on the importance of protecting healthy soil, water, and air.
Approach
The course employs interactive teaching methods, including workshops and field trips. It is one of the rare examples of incorporating Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) topics into the formal curriculum in Serbia at a local level.
Following classes during the year, the students participated in an interactive game challenge in collaboration with farmers. A course manual for students has been produced and will be in use during the next academic year 2024/2025.
