Farmer creates knowledge

Farmer creates knowledge (in German: Landwirt schafft Wissen) are a set of educational resources on agriculture and soil, developed by AGES, the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety. They are particularly aimed at primary and lower secondary levels and available in German.

Objective

To create a better understanding of agricultural production and the links between agriculture, the environment and nutrition.

Approach

The educational materials support teachers to work thorough questions with their class and include worksheets. The content has been divided into six topics: agriculture simply explained; soil; plant nutrition; bees and other pollinators; cereals; and plant breeding. Within the framework of the project, suitcases with grain seeds can be purchased for use in class experiments.

Questions exploring the importance of healthy soils include: What would my breakfast look like without insect pollination? What do we have to thank plant breeding for and what does it have to do with climate change? What is soil made of and who inhabits it? What does a plant need to live? What do oats actually look like and what are they used for? Which fruit and vegetables are grown in Austria and where do they grow?”
