Green Spoons
The Green Spoons project addresses the question of how to engage young people in environmentally responsible nutrition and biodiversity. By combining learning-by-doing with their familiarity with the digital world, Green Spoons uses quizzes, research and cooking to impart knowledge and skills on how diet can positively impact soil, water, climate, and biodiversity. It is particularly aimed at secondary school-aged children.
Run by Slow Food Germany e.V., the project receives funding from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection, as well as the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation.
Objective
The objective of the Green Spoons project is to raise awareness among young people about the topic of soil, its function and relevance. Young people are encouraged to understand the processes occurring in soil, its importance, the threats it faces, and what we can do about it.
Approach
The Green Spoons project adopts a blended learning approach, combining digital and analogue media and methods. Utilising their smartphones, young people can access information on the website, learn, and research new topics, allowing them to strengthen and consolidate their existing knowledge.
Three modules are under development – on the topics of soil (from 2023), water (from 2024), and climate (from 2025), which teachers can easily integrate into their curriculum. Fully developed teaching units are available to download under “Teaching material” for secondary level I, featuring content from the website, including worksheets, mind map templates, and printable puzzles.
The website offers activities for young people, parents, and teachers, applicable in both classroom and extracurricular settings—be it at home, in the garden, neighbourhood, or kitchen. Online resources such as videos, podcasts, recipes, and experiments enhance accessibility and versatility, making the project adaptable to various contexts.
