‘Let’s save the soil of Brescia and Bergamo’ event

The “Let’s Save the Soil of Brescia and Bergamo” (in Italian: Salviamo il suolo Brescia e Bergamo) is an event held on 20 April 2024 that aimed to become the largest mobilisation ever undertaken in the Lombardy region in Italy to protect the soil ecosystem. It consisted of different actions held across two locations: a flash mob around the Caravaggio Sanctuary in the province of Bergamo was held in the morning, to manifest against the realization of a logistic hub nearby, while an all-day-long festival was held at the Quarry Park (a natural park which was recently obtained after the requalification of a sand-excavation sites system) in the southern part of the city of Brescia metropolitan area. Each flash mob included a dissemination session where organisers outlined the principles of a proposed bill on territorial sustainability and logistics. The festival featured the participation of various environmental associations as well as the members of the Environmental Consultation of the municipality of Brescia.

Unfortunately, some of the activities organised for the afternoon could not be held due to a storm, but the mobilisation was still able to bring together around 800 people.

Objective

The objectives of the event were to:

  • To raise visibility and awareness about the issue of land consumption in the region.
  • To engage the public and establish a network of associations both prior to and during the event.

Approach

The event served as a call to action for the entire community, promoting soil health by addressing land consumption and involving various environmental organisations.
