Lithuanian Soil Science Society
The Lithuanian Soil Science Society (Dirvožemininkų draugija) is a community that brings together soil scientists, agricultural specialists, and individuals interested in soil and plant nutrition. The society acts as a platform for scientists in the fields of soil and plant nutrition to exchange information, coordinating research, organising conferences, seminars, and expeditions, providing consultations, and maintaining connections with other soil science and plant nutrition organisations. Participants include scientists in soil and plant nutrition, practitioners, and students.
Objective
The main objective is to facilitate the exchange of information about soil, discuss various soil types and conditions in the country, and raise awareness and disseminate knowledge about soil among professionals and the wider society.
Approach
The society organises conferences and seminars on both general and specialised soil-related topics, such as soil acidity and soil physics. An important aspect of its activities is the annual expeditions to different regions of the country, which have been held since 2005. These expeditions focus on specific soil types in each region, involving on-site exploration of soil profiles. Participants include scientists from various fields (soil science, geography, agronomy, forestry, geology, geomorphology, and landscape science), practitioners (such as foresters and farmers), and high school students. These expeditions are covered by local and specialised news outlets, extending their reach to a broader audience.
