The future of our soil

“The future of our soil” (in German: Die Zukunft unseres Bodens) is a publication containing educational materials produced the Forum Umweltbildung (Forum for Environmental Education) in Austria. It is available as a PDF and is particularly designed to be used at upper secondary level and also in adult education.

Objective

The primary objective is to increase awareness about the importance of healthy soils for society and highlight the hydrological functions of healthy soil.

Approach

  • The publication examines quantitative soil protection issues in Austria,  and was produced involving data and the input of experts from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Regions and Water Management (BML) and the Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK).

The background information contained in the publication focuses on the following questions:

  • What is soil and why is its protection important?
  • What factors contribute to high land consumption in Austria?
  • What are the problems associated with land use in Austria?
  • What measures can be taken to mitigate land consumption?
  • How do current megatrends impact our soil?

The comprehensive material package comprises a poster, digital tools (Genially), and an accompanying booklet featuring background information, methodological suggestions, and worksheets. The didactic methods provided are suitable for various school subjects at the upper secondary level and adult education, and can be used in both classroom settings and online educational programmes.
