The Vocational School (EPAL) of the American Farm School

The Vocational School (EPAL) of the American Farm School in Greece offers a blend of high-quality general education and professional training in agronomy, food, and the environment. Rooted in real-world experiences and a ‘learn by doing’ approach, it provides comprehensive education in environmental, agricultural, and life sciences for both young vocational students and adults. The school’s holistic approach aims to prepare individuals to lead, innovate, and contribute to Greece and its neighbouring countries’ sustainable future.

Objective

The Vocational School’s focus is on environmental education, emphasising practical experience alongside theoretical learning. The school instils values of respect, protection, and sustainability of the environment, imparted by experts passionate about environmental education.

Approach

The programme consists of:
Morning Curriculum: Following the Ministry of Education’s requirements, the curriculum includes theoretical and practical components.
Afternoon Practical Training: Students engage in hands-on training on the educational farm, science labs and an enhanced English language programme.

Grade Structure:

10th Grade: General scientific concepts are taught, with emphasis on foundational knowledge necessary for further specialised studies. Creative and research activities are encouraged, supported by the school’s resources, including library, computer and science laboratories and educational farm.
11th Grade: Greater emphasis is placed on subjects within agronomy, food, and the environment, integrating classroom, laboratory, and farm-based learning.

12th Grade: Specialisations are offered in Plant Production, Animal Production, Food and Drink Technology, and Botany and Landscaping. Students earn a high school diploma upon completion, either through internal examinations or Pan-Hellenic Examinations.

The additional experiential learning programme (Practical Training) offered by EPAL is a unique programme in Greece. This type of education is offered only at the American Farm School and is compulsory for all students in the Vocational High School. The programme operates in collaboration with the Ministry of Rural Development and Food and upon completion of their studies students are awarded a relevant certificate.

Experiential Learning Programme: The EPAL offers a unique practical training programme in collaboration with the Ministry of Rural Development and Food. This hands-on education, in which small groups work on the farm and other facilities, complements theoretical learning, focusing on practical skills relevant to modern agriculture and the agri-food sector.

Topics covered by the syllabus include plant production; food technology; viticulture; winemaking technology; olive cultivation; snail breeding; cattle and chicken breeding; apiculture; farm machinery operation; landscaping; technical skills like painting, building, woodworking, and plumbing. Consistently updated and enriched, this programme ensures students gain relevant skills and knowledge, preparing them for careers in agriculture and related fields.
