Zemun Loess Profile

Zemun Loess Profile is a protected natural area located near the city centre of Zemun, Serbia, on the banks of the Danube River. This area is known for its rich geological history, showcasing layers of loess soil accumulated over tens of thousands of years, and provides evidence of paleogeographic developments during the Ice Age in the region.  The profile reveals a sequence of soil and sediment layers, which are valuable for studying past climatic conditions and environmental changes. The initiative is supported by the Ecological Association Zemun and the Belgrade City Secretariat for Environmental Protection.

Objective

The primary objectives are the protection of the site, research and education.

Approach

The Zemun Loess Profile serves as a scientific site for soil studies as well as an educational destination, hosting educational visits, workshops and field trips. Guided tours are provided and information panels explain its significance, enabling the general public to learn about geological history and the importance of soil conservation.
