Stories from the Subsoil: cultivating critical knowledge and systemic thinking for Europe’s soil horizon

The Centre for the Promotion of Science has received the 2025 Green Leaf Award, presented as part of the “We Are Looking for the Polluter of the Year and Environmental Champions of the Year” campaign, Serbia’s oldest and best-known environmental initiative. The award recognises the Centre’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness of soil health.

The award was accepted on behalf of the Centre for the Promotion of Science by its acting director, Iris Lekić. The award ceremony took place at the Radulovački Environmental Centre in Sremski Karlovci and was organised by Radio Belgrade 2 and the Vojvodina Forest Movement.

The Green Leaf Award recognises the Centre for the Promotion of Science’s continued efforts to make environmental protection, sustainable development and soil health accessible to the wider public. Through a range of programmes, projects, publications and public events, the Centre highlights the importance of scientific knowledge in preserving natural resources and promoting more sustainable practices across society.

In addition to the Centre for the Promotion of Science, this year’s Green Leaf Award recipients include Nikola Stanković, the Pirot Regional Landfill, Ivana Bakmaz of the Faculty of Biology at the University of Belgrade, Miloš Stanojević of the Carpe noctem association, Ildiko Horvat Babinski of the Serbian Alliance for Regenerative Agriculture, and the “Park Guardians” group from Odžaci.

Special Green Leaf Awards were presented to poet Pero Zubac for his lifelong dedication to nature and environmental values, and to Branislav Marinkov for his contribution to promoting environmental protection through the media.

This year’s Black Leaf Award was given to the concept of people travelling alone in cars, symbolising unsustainable behaviour patterns that contribute to increased traffic congestion, energy consumption and environmental pollution.

For decades, the “We Are Looking for the Polluter of the Year and Environmental Champions of the Year” campaign has recognised individuals, organisations and initiatives whose work contributes to environmental protection and the development of environmental awareness in Serbia.
