LOESS at the European Mission Soil Week 2024 in Brussels

The European Mission Soil Week (EMSW) 2024, held on 12-13 November in Brussels, brought together a diverse array of stakeholders to address critical soil health challenges. The event showcased innovative research, practical solutions, and actionable strategies for improving soil health across Europe.

Over the course of two days, participants engaged in:
– keynote interventions from leading experts in soil health; in the unveiling of the first 25 Mission Soil Living Labs
– pioneering projects aimed at combating soil degradation, pollution, and biodiversity loss across Europe
– interactive discussions, fostering collaboration and idea-sharing among researchers, policymakers, and practitioners
– networking sessions
– and field visits, offering hands-on insights into soil health challenges and innovations.

The event was organized by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI), in collaboration with the Joint Research Centre – EU Soil Observatory (EUSO). Additional support was provided by the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD) and the European Research Executive Agency (REA).

On 14 November, an exclusive side event was held for the 50 Mission Soil funded projects. This session featured cluster meetings focused on: Data and knowledge management, soil indicators and monitoring and the communication and stakeholder engagement, where partners from LOESS organized part of the session and made connections with Curiosoil (LOESS’ sister project), among others.

Concretely, the communications and engagement cluster met in Brussels to amplify awareness of soil health issues addressed by #MissionSoil. The event highlighted significant potential for cross-project collaboration and shared learning.
